Three replies so far and not even a hint of a solution.
Since everybody keeps faulting the unions about pay and benefits maybe it is time the Unions start focusing on non-monetary issues. The middle class is shrinking and I don't see that as stopping. Businesses have too many options for cheap labor.

Did you ever think it's not just their jobs they're worried about? Over-crowded prisons are extremely dangerous. Those Union members may very well be fighting for their lives.
Everyone's always quick to agree that Unions had their time. (the 40 hour work week, paid overtime, an end to child labor, etc.) But then people seem to think Unions don't have a place any more because Union labor is expensive. What has destroyed this country is redistricting. Politicians have been able to draw exact lines around households known to vote Republican and households known to vote Democrat.
