If you're supposed to stay away from non-Christians, why did Jesus himself dine with tax collectors, prostitutes, thieves, and the like? The "stay away from non-believers" thing was really meaning "don't allow non-believers to influence what you believe". Go read how Jesus handled the same accusations.
