We have been using a rewards card for all purchases and bills for the last 15 years. We have used the rewards for free hotel nights, rental car days and gift cards. I recently purchased a DSLR camera using gift cards earned through the rewards card.
Another thing to consider is all of the retirement accounts that depend on dividends for income. Any IRA 's other than Roth accounts are taxed as ordinary income already. They do not have the tax advantage of the 15% rate on dividends. A lot of seniors depend on or will in the future depend on that dividend income.
But don't forget that most of these investments are through IRA's and 401k's which are taxed as regular income when withdrawn, so the 15% tax is not applicable to them.
Unfortunately, if you do the math, very few will pay for themselves in a reasonable amount of time. Only 2 seem worth it to me.
