And R&D is expensive and the economy of scale is not there. Cars are far cheaper to make when you have little R&D to do any you can spread fixed costs among 100s of thousands or millions of sales as compared to less than 10,000.

Agreed, diesels are practical EVs are not. They need to get much cheaper and get greater range for them to be practical.
