Hard to believe so many people don't realize that a fixer-upper in high-price high-tax states such as CA starts at around $425-$450K. In NYC, probably closer to $700K. Costs are relative to location. Be careful not to draw the conclusion that all people who earn $250K+ a year are rich.

Elsewhere in the world, they experience earthquakes, floods, tsunamis, etc. and lose farmland to these natural disasters (including cutting down the trees on the hillside and then watch the soil wash away in the next monsoon). We pave over our farmland or build a housing development or Wal-Mart.
