I thought the heading "Reading the Tea Leaves" said it all. Most "technical" approaches violate the primary premise "past performance does not guarantee future returns". By looking at what happened without taking into account the factors that contributed, one can easily be mislead.

Formulaic approaches to calculate your needed retirement savings are, by nature, horrendously inaccurate as they apply general assumptions to individually unique situations.
