I wouldn't say irresponsibility is the issue. Many of the people filing bankruptcy were responsible executives but were forced to file bankruptcy due to circumstances beyond their control (recession, divorce). Savings has little to do with it. No one planned for the recession.

Bouncing back from bankruptcy does NOT take 7-10 years regardless of your credit score prior to bankruptcy.  You can rebuild your credit rather quickly post bankruptcy if you are diligent.  To rebuild credit you need to charge small amounts on a secured or unsecured credit card and be sure to pay your bill on time ever...more
