They got off way better then The Verve did with "Bitter Sweet Symphony". They lost 100% of the song to Mick Jagger and Keith Richards because they sampled a track from an album of orchestral Rolling Stone tracks (not even the original song).
From what I remember, the guys don't "own" the rights to the Spinal Tap name. But they have some kind of deal where, as long as the do something as Spinal Tap ever few years (CD, Tour, TV) the retain the names and likenesses.
