John Walsh, America's Most Wanted, had an expert on years ago and I never forgot it.  Expert said forget the alarms, walls, guns, etc., dogs will be the best deterrant  to a home's invasion.   Thieves want quiet, not a barking dog.  They will move on to the next house.
