The US needs to go back to defined pension plans. The 401k experiment that was started in the late 70s and early 80s is not working. @5437 - Totally agree. Everyone should know, but unfortunately basic financial education is extremely lacking for a LOT of people. If people can't even iron out this type of stuff, how are we expecting them to save for retirement (IRAs, 401ks, etc.).
