Are we forgetting that Chrysler was the most profitable of the Big Three immediately before the merger with Daimler? Daimler ran the company into the ground due to a lack of R and D and then pissed on the smoking ruins.
Almost everyone that owns a home has access to either natural gas or LPG. I drove a car back in the '90 that could run on either gasoline or natural gas. One flick of a switch on the dash changed between fuels with no noticeable effect even at freeway speeds. Several of my friends operated their vehicles on LPG.

What alternative universe does the author live in? Sure the Irish employed in the tourist industry are friendly but outside of them the Irish are about as friendly as the natives in Elko, Nevada.
All the people I know that lost their homes in the crash pulled huge amounts of money out to finance big cars, long vacations and other luxuries. Were they abetted by mortgage brokers pushing re-fis? Yes. Were they at least partially culpable due to their own greed? Also yes.
Accept it, all the abuses the Civil Service was supposed to address are back in spades.
