No one paid the 90% tax rate in the fifties. There were a ton of deductions that could be taken to reduce the effective tax rate. For example: you could deduct the tax on gasoline, there were no limits on housing interest and lots more.

It's not rocket science. Invest in good solid companies that pay good dividends and mix in some bonds and hold for the long term. Yes the prices go up and down, but keep the principle working for you. Also reinvest the dividends if you can.
