You might own a home in NYC but I do not consider NYC a great place to retire unless you are wealthy. The same with Hawaii and most of these places on the list. You might be working and making top money on oil rigs in N. Dakota but would you really want to retire there?
I think for a military person, anywhere in the Southern U.S. is the best bet due to the large number of military bases and the low cost of livinig and less expensive homes.
My wife and I own a home in Mexico and live there for about 8 months out of the year. Yes, it costs less to live in Mexico but Mexico is not for everyone.
