4 Cyl. cars sound terrible with a loud pipe...but...opening up the exhaust might actually have a gas mileage and power improvement.

I believe you are referring to Bob Gliddens National Champion Pro Stock pinto, which was nearly undefeated in two seasons of Pro Stock competition in NHRA. His later Fairmont Pro Stock did not lose a round all year in a sea of mopars and GM pro stockers.
