I agree, MI has long harsh winters. The difference is you still get a long HOT summer! Western WA does not. Some years no summer, Its not at all consistent. People who are against this have obviously never lived in Western Washington. The winter is LONG! Every days is grey and overcast and a usually consist of a light rain. Most years summer doesn't arrive until July and only lasts 2 months! This is an awesome treat for staff and students. Kudos to them!
