I don't have cable, don't want it.   I do have DSL and am happy about the cost @ $28/mo.   I have a prepaid phone... of the Blackberry variety. I pay $25 every 90 days to retain my account balance. I can call, text, and get web. The cost per use is higher than if you had unlimited usage, but for me, in the long run...more

How baby boomers could depress stocks fo...

If Boomers have any sense, they will be investing in dividend paying stocks. Take the dividends, leave the priciple alone as long as possible... and since one never knows when the end will be, the smart move is don't touch principle. Save for that emergency, then touch as little as possible.   It's like having rental...more

It's the economy, stupid.   Unfortunately, the article also fails to mention the numbers that have had to use their 401Ks and IRAs to survive. How many people in their 40s and 50s have lost their jobs, 99ed out, and are now going through retirement savings because they have no choice? Unfortunately, a sizeable number...more

Earnings trump debt rhetoric

AG999 - Love the TARDIS!   The reason European countries went for the shorter workweek and earlier retirement age years ago was not "luxury." They recognized that they had a high unemployment problem. This high unemployment was not necessarily due to Socialism. It was more due to the fact that they tried to avoid suc...more

Boy! I've never travelled beyond Canada and TJ, but these are really stupid questions. I have a passport, just in case... and it's the best ID there is. Earthquakes? Give me a break! Check Wikipedia. Can I ever come back.... Good Lord! Even if you're planning on renouncing US Citizenship, you can come back if you can a...more

Something about the 401Ks that doesn't get mentioned.   The encouragement of 401Ks and IRAs by the government brought a lot of money into the stock markets that would not have otherwise been in. It didn't seem like the stock market. At first they seemed like savings accounts. Loads of people understand that the stock...more

I've never understood why people seemed to think that 401Ks would work for any but the people who really didn't need them in the first place.   Always you hear the financial advisers who are telling the blunt truth that 401Ks are 1 leg of a 3-legged-stool.... 1 leg = Social Security; 2 leg = traditional pension; 3 le...more
