Sounds like someone let their teacher union do their investing for them.  Most 401ks have options for investing that you can choose.  Did you pick a lost cost index fund?  Or did your union invest in bonds that ended up being worthless.

80% of investors who try to time their buys and sells to highs and lows do worse than dollar cost averaging.  I agree, buy good stock with dividends.  Buy low cost index funds.  Why pay a manager.

25 years ago I moved all my funds into emerging stocks and have left them to ride the ups and downs.  Right now, I look like a genius.
