I have done everyone of the above jobs, except large tree removal. If your parents owned their own home, almost all of this stuff is learned from your parents as you grow up. I think adding a federal sales tax of 1 -2 cents per dollar is probably the least painful way to go. However, it has an unfair impact upon low wage earners and only drives them further into poverty, which then adds to public assistance spending. Self taught my whole life. Can tear down an engine/trans car, truck, & or MC. Do all my own plumbing, carpentry, fencing, drywall, etc, and make a good buck doing side jobs. Depends a lot on your life style I think. Live in a city , close to work, rent, & exercise common sense with discretionary spending, and I think city living wins out. What are the 3 most important things to existance? Food, clothing, & shelter. Hasn't changed in 3 plus million years of existance. Throw in sex for propagation of the species. Everything else is a luxury. Prove me wrong. We've managed to build a society based upon human fears.

My beef is: why is not owning a car a bad thing? It is in my book , aactually a smart move financially for most of us. A car is a major financial burden for what amounts to very little additional freedom when all is weighed in.
