New York does not charge property tax on motor vehicles.  If you own a new or late model car or truck this also makes a difference that can run into quite a few hundred dollars a year.

Upstate NY is a good place to retire.  Property taxes are not too terrible and there is a pension exemption from State income taxes.  The only really terrible hit is the atrocity of an 8% sales tax.  The above posters should do some homework instead of running off at the mouth.

Who in their right mind would want to retire in ANY city?  The whole object of retirement is get away from the industrialized nightmare.
