These houses will still need to be maintained; nothing is worse than having property NOT being lived in - as then the 'day to day' maintenance items aren't being done either. So there will be a cost to having these empty houses sometime in the future.

The way I understand it, they are NOT paying for the uninsured; they are paying for the INSURED - it is a federal program, requiring federal dollars...
You should be used to it by now; those that make less pay MUCH less in taxes, receive most from our social programs, etc. - I'd LOVE to see them change the retirement system to be more of a 'needs' based system; those making in excess of the 'average' probably don't need it nearly as much as those that don't.

The worst thing about all of this - is there isn't any accountability as to HOW you got underwater in the first place. If you used your house as a 'piggy-bank' all these years - and are now upside down on your loan, no one cares...as opposed to those that (unfortunately) bought at the high end of the market...
