You obviously chose to stay in very crappy motels in very crappy locations.  A little research goes a long way.  If budget is your only concern; you will definitely end up in bad motels.

Motor homes are nice if you are wealthy; but really who has 20 to 30K for a used one or 50-200K for a new one?  Even good camping trailers are 5-10K.  Not to mention the extra gas and hookups.  20K will rent a lot of years worth of nice hotel rooms and no upkeep.
