Did my response imply ignorance of the utility of clothing for warmth and versatility?   If my understanding of language is relatively accurate, then to "overuse" can mean to "use excessively".

Yes.    As far as I am aware, we are the only living things on this planet that use clothing.  From my persepctive, clothing is overused and the magnitude of overuse is notable.
