Schools add to the GPA to give students credit for taking harder than normal classes, not to make them feel good. Typically honors classes give you an extra .5 and AP an extra 1 point.

Actually, no. Most public schools these days add 1 point to the grade point of each AP level class, including at least one of the best schools in the United States.
My oldest was a valedictorian. She worked *really* hard, but she had everything she needed to succeed. Never lacked for parental help and interest, food, shelter, rest, comfort, love, compassion.
