The thing that made the original funny was that it wasn't really meant to be funny. It was taped live so they had a lot of mistakes like flubbed lines, special effects gone awry, sometimes you could even see a hand opening a door that didn't open the way it was supposed to. @No Angel Myself--here's the thing---in those cases you would be arrested/caught because then you wouldn't be dead because that's what would suit "their" needs.

I wonder if they know about the Sanger Mansion in Waterville, NY. This mansion is surely  bigger than some of the ones described in this slideshow. It's a mammoth building that was recently lived in by a family of 4 but has so many rooms, hallways, passages, and that's to say nothing of the size of the property itself!
