We  did our own version of this but more at the age of 51 and 55- we also have 4 sons we sent through college.  We lived frugally  -but did not want for anything- lots of things were second hand (bikes, toys, most of our Furniture as long as it was not upholstered).  Other then college and clothes - our kids had to pay...more
