I think the reason it's a big deal is that the company that is doing the demo actually has to buy the food they give out as samples. The food may be free to the customers but it wasn't free to begin with.
My personal favorite was a Thai place that start doing an all you can eat buffet. The first plate was normal sized. Every trip after the first they gave you a teacup saucer. I never make it past a second trip anyway but it just seemed chintzy. Never have been back.
The article was posted Friday night. If you bothered to read the first few comments you'd see the first was logged at 11:48p on Fri. The peak went from Friday night until dawn of Saturday with the most activity in the hours before dawn.
