It technically not a "free ride". For one, it's not a 40-hour a week job, Second, it is the only employer in the US that runs its own courts and prison system. That said, I took advantage of tuition assistance and got my 4-year degree (it took 10 years to do so) but I was also complete debt free when I finished.
I drive my Civic to work. It gets 31 mpg city, best I got on a trip was 41.. I drive my van to Lowe's. It has a trailer hitch in case I need to haul even more. But it get 20 mpg on a good day with a tail wind. I see no point sending Oil company execs kids to Harvard unless I have no choice.
