Most sophisticated airplanes, commercial, military and a lot of private aircraft, have a system called WOW - short for Weight On Wheels. This senses weight on the wheels and will not allow the gear to be retracted. Apparently this plane either didn't have that or it was not working. Probably need to put one on now Dad!

Besides returning any monies, there ought to be some jail time involved! And not just a couple days!
