I for one have no problem if BMW wants to make a front wheel drive 1-series. My '02 Jetta TDI has FWD and an independent rear suspension. This is all fine and good and I applaud all those brands that scored well. However, though initial quality is an important benchmark it would be interesting to know what the same owners think about these same vehicles after 3-5 years of ownership.

I am not surprised by your experience with the Passat. It has been a steaming pile since it was brought to our shores. I cannot speak to the newest version that is made in the U.S. but all of the ones that came before just don't hold up.
