quilter - it can be genetic. But I think these days, the proportion of genetic cases relative to the whole has reduced. In other words, more people today are fat through bad eating and exercise habits than by genetics alone.
Jenny - First, it's Brynn not Brian. Second, diet is simply what you eat on a daily basis. I'm pretty sure Brynn is referring to one's daily diet (i.e., food consumption), not a weight-loss fad.
