My fiance has had a nightly chocolate chip Keeblers ritual since he was a kid. We never buy them at full price because $4 for a bag of cookies is ridiculous. The last time they went on sale at the grocery store was for a dollar more than they used to be. We bought a couple bags anyway, and they felt lighter. Inside, th...more
Ditto Georgia Mom: legal marriage only accounts for a couple of these. I congratulate the author on his successful 12 years, but marriage isn't for everyone. My boyfriend and I don't intend to ever get married by the government definition. For one thing, we're both in our early 20's. People change, and divorce is hella...more
I do wear clothes several times per week until they get sweaty (and the workout clothes only go in on Sundays), but I'm finicky about my towels and bedsheets. I only have a few towels that are used to wipe up practically everything, so they get germy fast. Our bathroom is badly ventilated so they stay moist and acquire...more
Geeze, what's with the virulent comments? I thought this post was enlightening. My father always talked about how his grandfather could afford a middle-class lifestyle with house and car for a wife and 6 kids on a brick-layer's salary, but I'd never seen the numbers before. I'm 23 and graduated two years ago with a BS ...more
My local newspaper put up a paywall. The thing is, the people who pay for it don't just get content; they're treated to full-page pop-up ads and pictures of used cars splashed across the background, plus ads on the side and in the middle of every article. We refuse to give them money to sell us things, but they're pret...more
We eat out twice a month, at most...usually less. We're two people. For 12 months in a year, that makes roughly 24 glasses of soda every year. 24*$1.90=$45.60!
Could we technically buy something nice with that? Yes. Would it be worth restraining ourselves on the rare occasions we splurge? Definitely not. Technically...more
I use my credit rewards points regularly. Don't bother with the gift cards or whatnot...it's just a way to get you to spend more money than you would have without. Both of my cards offer statement credits. It isn't as satisfying as getting something tangible, but it is $100 you don't have to pay that month.
From experience, I can tell you that doing what you want with your money is a lot less expensive than being depressed. When you feel trapped, tied-down by working all the time and never using your earnings, you burn out. You just stop applying yourself. Since I've lightened up in the past few years, quit a miserable jo...more
It never occurred to me that I could marry for money. I'm 5'2" and a size 8, which is perfectly attractive I think, but nowhere close to the league of leggy blondes that could get in with the country club set. I take care of myself financially by default, and fear the thought that I could ever be completely dependent o...more
