It's more of a total plane weight for the Airlines. The heavier the plane, the more it costs to fly the route.
So, if a person is heavy enough to require the purchase of two seats, then so be it..

Metal buyers know that they can make some money on pennies, and many folks hoard/save them for possible gains later.
I said many, many years ago to eliminate them and round up, or down to the nearest nickel....more
