Personally, I expect and hope to be able to do a lot more things early in my retirement than later.  If I don't have a lot left when I'm say 85, so be it, because by then I won't likely be driving a car, playing golf or doing much traveling so I plan on withdrawing more early on so I can do those things while I'm young...more

I think the point of the article is correct even if the examples used don't fit most people (me included) can't relate to spending $28K on a car.
