If you pronoun yourself an American while you are in Africa, or Asia and some other part of world, you may be asked "which country?"  Because many places think that "America" refers to the entire Western Hemisphere. It's happened to me several times.

Arrogantly stupid. We think that as being an American of the US. it disqualifies everyone else from from being "American" in both  North and South America.

Absolutely confusing to American students who don't study geography and think that Canada is a state in the US.
