This is something my family and I have learned in our travels all over the world. When the unfamiliar becomes familiar, the world becomes smaller, more like community.
I made sure I knew my kids' teachers, had regular parent/teacher conferences and attended open house from elementary through high school. I even got to know some of their college instructors and profs socially.
