The biggest problem I've seen, is horses being started too young. Horses bones are not fully hardened and mature till they are 4 or 5 years old, yet too many people start riding them at age 2 and 3 which causes problems for them in the long run.

I was taught that the average horse could handle a rider + gear weight of around 250 lbs give or take. I'm 6'-2" and 230 lbs. My tack adds another 50 lbs. so I know I'm a bit over the limit, but the horse I ride, a 1200 lb. 16-2 hand gelding is none the worse for wear. But I know I'm pushing his limits with my weight.
